If you have received a personal injury as a result of a crime committed, then you can claim compensation. You can claim from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority or the court could order the person that committed the crime to pay you compensation for your injury or and damages or losses you have suffered.

You can claim from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority if you were a victim of an assault or if you were injured whilst trying to aid the police after a crime has already been committed. If you are a close relative of somebody that dies as a result of a crime that has been committed, you can also claim on their behalf.

If you are involved in a car accident, you must ensure that the police are notified and the relevant insurance companies have been informed. The incident must be reported as soon as possible, and witness’s names and addresses need to be noted. If you have been a victim of medical mal-practice, for example, suffering an injury due to deliberate action to harm you taken by a medical profession, there are certain routes you must take to ensure that your claim is handled in the appropriate manner. Your attorneys will be able to help you manage this sort of case correctly.

You must generally file a claim for compensation within two years through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. If the case is taken to court, you cannot personally apply for compensation yourself. You need to give the prosecution as much information as you can and the amount of compensation offered will be dependant on what the offender can afford to pay.
